The Birthstone Collection (full print of all 12 stones)
“When I started planning for 2020, I wanted to create a theme running through the year with small artworks completed monthly that would eventually lead to 2021’s calendar design and a themed poster or print. I considered painting the birth flower for each month but seeing as flowers are my most common subject, I wanted to paint something different and that would challenge me.
I decided to illustrate the monthly birthstones as I’ve never covered gemstones in watercolour before, and in order to make them both more interesting and more beautiful, paint them inset into beautiful pieces of antique jewelry.
I hope you’ll enjoy these exquisite jewels in finely-crafted precious metal settings painted with love, care and attention to the smallest details as much as I enjoyed creating this collection for you.” – Libby
Birthstones are not only fun and nostalgic, but throughout our lives they serve as a beautiful reminder of the month when we were born. The history behind birthstones is fascinating, with origins that date back to the Old Testament and Aaron’s breastplate, which featured 12 gemstones that represented the 12 tribes of Israel.
Over time, the 12 gems eventually became associated with the zodiac. Then, in 1912, the National Association of Jewelers established the modern list of birthstones we know today.
